A Pup Named Scooby-Doo: Complete 1st Season

Lots of fun!
My 4 year old daughter loves this DVD! The stories are short and simple, the "monsters" are silly, and with 13 episodes, this gets us through a long car trip! I'd highly recommend this!!

Good but not great.
I loved this series of Scooby-Doo when I was a kid and so now that my daughter has an obsession with Scooby-Doo I was happy to pick up the "Pup" series, season 1 for her. I'm a little disappointed however. There are some significant areas of the DVD transfer that left the animation sketchy. It should be much much clearer than it is. This isn't an issue with my TV or DVD player. Some parts of the show just seem to look like they've been ripped from an AVI. If it wasn't for the low quality DVD transfer I'd have given this a 5 star rating; as it stands now though, it's a 4 star.

Scooby Doobie Puppy
This version of Scooby and the gang is a series i watched on Saturday morning TV and i liked it. Shaggy would often serve as the narrator at the start of each episode, usually ending his monologue inserting the name of the series. For example: "...things aren't usually what they seem to me and a pup named Scooby-Doo..." and then that episode's story would begin. On hand for the show were Don Messick and Casey Kasem as the voices of Scooby and Shaggy respectively. I always got a kick out the running gag's on the show where Daphne would almost always call out for her butler in a time of crisis and sure enough, her butler would appear out of nowhere. Velma had few lines on the series...usually saying only her catchphrase of "jinkies". Her eye glasses were exaggerated. Fred was written more of a know it all who didn't really know it all...usually blaming high school bully Red Herring as the criminal in each mystery. The facial expressions were more along the lines of Tex Avery and Bob...

Tin Man (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)

An Exquisite Revisiting to the O.Z.
If you are expecting ruby slippers and a cackling green lady, you are in for an awakening of your own. Growing up with singing munchkins, I realized, hey, I am a grownup. And SciFi seemed to realize it too with a magnificent departure from the 1939 MGM film to a brilliant, futuristic, decadent, and sometimes apocalyptic telling. The reinventions of characters and fantastical sets soon transport you from the familiar to a place you find yourself hard to take your eyes off of-- from phosphorous-glowing trees, desolate paths, Metropolitan-like art deco palaces, and underworlds unlike anything and then again reminiscent of a certain alphabet city pre-Rudy.

The story itself is not for the kiddies. Mine were told continuously to leave the room, go play, and find something else to do. But the grown up fairy tale is long overdue. The story actually had twists, turns, and menacing meaning-- much more substance and meaning than the trifles the network and cable gurus seem to...

Amazing
This will sound wierd, but this movie is like a realistic explanation for the original wizard of oz. I know its incorrect to say this, but, when I watch this movie I feel like its the real version, and the old movie is like a watered down "kids" version of the story. That being said, I really enjoyed it, all six hours of it on the Sci-fi channel. Anyway, I will definitely be purchasing this when it comes out. Its so cool to see a movie you kind of know, but then dont really know at all! I recommend it for anyone, all ages.

Great concept, so-so execution
WARNING: SOME SPOILERS

I loved the premise behind this--a darker, more adult, epic fantasy version of the Wizard of Oz. I was actually pretty psyched about seeing this. Did it deliver? Well, kind of.

The plot moves along at a good clip for the most part, and the special effects are surprisingly well-done for a made-for-TV miniseries. I liked that the monkey bats seemed to be some sort of puppetry or stop motion rather than entirely CGI. But overall, I was left with the feeling that this series could have been so much better.

One of the biggest problems for me was the dialogue. Tin Man suffers from a severe case of "writer speak"--characters spout lots of "clever" lines that no real person would ever say. It doesn't help that Zooey Deschanel seems to be locked into a narrow range of acting. I don't know if it's her fault or the director's, but regardless of what's going on she conveys a deadpan, sardonic nonchalance. When she's swept into...

Hogfather

Faithful to the book... read the book first
After much hunting I found this DVD in the US... I wasn't sure what to expect from a live action Discworld movie, I just couldn't imagine that the humor could translate properly. In the end, it did and it didn't.

A short Summary:

In the fantasy world of Discworld, their winter festival is called Hogswatch, which is ruled over by the Hogfather... a fat jolly man with tusks who doles out gifts to nice little children. An Assassin is hired to "take care of" the Hogfather, and he goes about it by invading the lair of the Toothfairy. To try to keep the world in order, Death puts on the Hogfather Costume and tries to sub in for the evening... meanwhile, Death's grandaughter, Susan is off to figure out what happened to the Hogfather.

If you have read the book, then you know that you probably laughed so hard you cried. Though the movie is funny, it is not nearly so as the book. They remain fairly faithful to the book, cutting only where necessary. But if...

Well Done
While awaiting the release of the Hogfather movie on DVD, I was amazed to run across the movie on the ION cable TV network on 12/23/07. I too expect that for those not familiar with the Discworld, it may be a little mystifying, but for those of us that are, the little details were wonderful. I particularly liked the rendition of HEX, complete with the "Anthill Inside" sticker and the little hourglass which popped out when it was processing. Getting a look at actual actors in costume playing Constable Visit and Nobby Nobbs, however briefly, was a treat--in fact, all the costuming and casting was very reminiscent of the way the Discworld is pictured in the Paul Kidby illustrations. The rendition of Susan and Bilious the Oh God inside the child's painting on their way to the Tooth Fairy's domain was excellent and very much as I had imagined it. Finally, Terry Pratchett himself makes a cameo appearance as the proprietor of the toy store where Death purchases the wooden horse to give...

Hogfather - The Movie, at Last!
The Hogfather, on the Discworld, is what Santa Claus is in the United States. Except it's called "Hogwatch" rather than Christmas. All the way back to that red and white, the colors of blood on snow.

The Discworld has Auditors, creatures who loath humanity and all the things that make us human. The Auditors engage the Guild of Assassins to whack the Hogfather, and the Guild designates the very spooky Jonathan Teatime (it's pronounced "tee-ah-tim-eh"), who hires a gang and methodically sets about this task. It takes Death; Death's granddaughter, Susan; Bilious, the Oh God of Hangovers; most of the wizardly faculty of Unseen University; and the Tooth Fairy to defeat Teatime, his gang and the Auditors.

Because more is at stake than Father Christmas. Belief is what makes us human, where the rising angel meets the falling ape. And if we can't practice on little lies - the Hogfather, the Tooth Fairy and the like - we won't be ready for the big lies - that there are...

Punky Brewster: Season Four

Our unforgettable "Spunky Punky" is back for one last round on DVD!
Although the considerable delay between this DVD set and Season 3 (which was released well over a year ago, in July 2006) was enough to concern some people, the fourth and final season of "Punky Brewster" will officially put hard-core fans at ease! We've had to wait almost two years to get this, but now that it's been announced for February 26 (right around Valentine's Day!) there's plenty to look forward to.

"Punky" certainly has maintained a solid fan base over the years, with plenty of grown adults eager to revisit the episodes, as well as legions of contemporary kids, whose parents can be assured that each show is thirty minutes of innocent, lighthearted fluff. Of course, those adults who loved the show as children will be hard-pressed to watch it now without cringing a little at the shameless sap packed into every episode. Thank god! One of the greatest family shows ever
Like many other Punky fans, I'm thrilled to see the final season finally coming to DVD. After all there was alot of speculation that shout factory lost the rights and we may never see this final season. Thankfully they still do have the rights and we will see this final season (complete with more punky cartoons).

The Smurfs - Season One, Vol. One

Uncut and remastered.
The 80's gave us a golden age of Saturday morning cartoons. I can't think of any other era that had such a wide variety of different themes and approaches. These days most shows fall into the Japanese anime/card game genre. Back then you had several genres. One of them was the child friendly, parent approved, sugary sweet cutesy cartoons. The Smurfs has to be the top of the heap of those shows. The reason being was good production values and solid pacing of their stories which makes even a sedate and "safe" show fun to watch.

My first experience with the Smurfs wasn't this television. In fact my first exposure to the little blue creatures were in the form of little plastic figurines sold at the local Hallmark card store. I only knew of them as different little blue guys who wore different clothes that apparently denoted their profession or interest (I personally had the Karate Smurf and the Police Smurf) and they were created by somebody named Peyo (according to box that...

I randomly did an amazon search for smurfs dvd just now, and it looks like we will FINALLY see an official US release of this cartoon next year. The only thing that makes me hesitate to buy this is that it is season one volume one. I wonder if Turner is planning to release a special edition "complete series" box set at a later date.

If they were smart, the publisher would sell each of these dvd's with limited edition smurf figurines.

In regard to the previous review by Donald J. Lloyd, this set is indeed offered differently in the US and the UK. Unfortunately, neither is a complete set. The US set (5 discs; 13 hours and 31 minutes; 9 titles) is missing:

A Midsummer Night's Dream (TV Movie Dec 13, 1981)
Cymbeline (TV Movie Dec 20, 1982)
The Hawk (Theatrical Movie released Dec 10, 1993)

all of which are in the UK set.

Dennis Potter fans take note
Dennis Potter fans stateside should take note that this is the first US release of BLUE REMEMBERED HILLS in any form here. You could order a PAL version from the UK for $40 PLUS shipping (part of the Dennis Potter Collection), but now you can get this important work AND all these other great Helen Mirren performances for $60 in this box set. I don't miss the Shakespeare plays offered in the UK version of this set (I already have them as part of BBC Shakespeare sets)and the Poliakoff Soft Targets is a great bonus. I get a duplication in Apple Cart (which is part of the BBC Shaw set), but still, this new Mirren set is a GREAT VALUE!
Now let's hope BBC get off their bums and issue the Harold Pinter and Tom Stoppard plays they have in their vaults BEFORE the tapes completely disintegrate!

If the shown info is correct, this is not the complete set as issued in England. The England set has 6 discs and runs 17 hours, whereas this US one is 5 discs and runs only about 13 1/2 hours. I don't know why this is so, but an addition $20 would have made the US set worthwhile. Who wants an incomplete set?

A TRUE CLASSIC!
20the Century Fox has just released a big-screen version of the Dr. Seuss classic Horton Hears a Who, but did you know the story actually made its debut on the small screen nearly 40 years ago? In 1970 the story came to TV in a half-hour animated special produced by legendary Warner Bros. director, Chuck Jones. Responsible for some of the best Bug Bunny cartoons ever produced, Jones was no stranger to the works of Theodor Geisel, AKA Dr. Seuss, having directed another Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas a few years earlier.

I recall watching the special when I was a kid but had nearly forgotten about it until Warner Bros. released the special on a brand new deluxe DVD that also features several other cartoon shorts based on Dr. Seuss' books. Horton is a friendly, imaginative elephant that is the only one who can hear the voices coming from a spec of dust, the tiny world of the Whos. Pay Attention...
I mistakenly purchased this DVD instead of the film version; I've seen these stories on televison before. At any rate, the older-style annimation suits the Seuss stories, and the three extra stories ('Maize-daisy','The Butter Battles' and 'Horton Hatches a Who') are well-worth my mistake. This is a fine and classic addition to a DVD library.

See this movie with your children
Bond with your little ones as you relax with them to view this movie. The child in you will thank you for it. This is not a movie to see without children. Give the DVD as a gift to a little one but let the children enjoy it. Everyone is important, no matter how small is a message that sinks into you as you watch this movie.

I missed the first season. Now, I'm caught up with all the episodes. I enjoyed watching the Dvd. Some scenes were funny and some were serious. Keshia Cole's experienced alot in her life with her family.

Johnny Cash The Line, Walking with a Legend

This is my favorite DVD of all Johnny's dvds. It was worth all of my dvd's combined to see him impersonate Elvis! It is priceless. I wouldnt sell mine for any amount of money. I watch it over and over. Johnny was an amazing person. He knew exactly what he wanted and went after it. Whether it was June or his music, he got it. And overcame drugs besides. I love this man, he is and always will be missed.

So much better footage out there...the bulk of the dvd is available in their complete form. This is missing most of the hits. Not a horrible dvd, just not a 5 star effort.

A treasury, highly recommended especially for public library collections.
The latest in the Emmy award-winning series for Outstanding Children's Animated Program, Arthur Season 10 collects nineteen of Arthur's public television adventures on a thinpack set of five DVDs. Eight-year-old anthropomorphic aardvark Arthur Read and his friends confront the joys and difficulties of everyday life, from issues that arise out of keeping secrets to the experience of going to the hospital. Special features included closed captions for the hearing impaired, described video for the visually impaired, and downloadable teaching materials including the "Let's Read!" activity booklet for families, in English and in Spanish. The cheery, simple animated style combined with a matter-of-fact presentation that never patronizes children makes Arthur Season 10 a treasury, highly recommended especially for public library collections. 4.5 hours, color.

Great Show!
This is a great collection of shows from the 10 year anniversary season. My 4 year old goes absolutely nuts over this show. My 13 year old even watches it with her but won't admit that she still likes it - yet somehow whenever it comes on she seems to end up in the room. Hmmmm, coincidence? I think not. Great job, Arthur!

seriously, this is the best show ever. i'm 19 yrs old and i still watch arthur even after more than 10 yrs. I remember when I used to be in Kindergarten and I would watch it everyday. it's my childhood memory :)

NYPD Blue - Seasons 1-4

Why Is This Series Still Incomplete On DVD?
This set is only the first 4 seasons, and I'm not seeing the other 8 seasons in any form--individually or in other box sets. I see Season 5 available in streaming, but that's it. The later seasons are where Sipowicz "grows up"--he's still satisfyingly rude, but not a complete nihilist anymore. Which is proven when his last boss (in these first 4 seasons, he can't get along with brass at all) recommends him as his successor for command of the squad. There's an outfit in Canada that has the complete series, but caveat emptor! I bought "Paper Chase" from them because I couldn't find anything beyond the first two ABC seasons here, and that 12-disc set has some defective discs. Plus they have a nasty habit of cramming 5 or 6 episodes on a disc, which doesn't work unless you use dual-layer discs, which they don't. I don't understand why they're still sitting on the last 8 seasons of an "official version" of this series.

One of the Greatest Shows !
My wife gave me this for Christmas and I was like a little kid, this is one of my favorite series ever to be on TV. So far I've only watched a few episodes from the 1st season which I actually missed when NYPD Blue came on, so I'm very happy to catch up on the series and how it all began.
I have no complaints with the picture quality, looks and sounds great to me, I'm playing them on a LCD screen, you can change you TV so it is the OLD 4:3 Screen, but it's better if it's left at the 16:9 screen default. The sound quality is Dolby Digital and it pretty damn good for an old show!

This show is highly recommended!!

Frisky Dingo - Season 1

Great show, but no extras on this disc
While I fully agree with all of the other reviewers here who reviewed the series - rather than the actual DVD - I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of any video extras. There are 11 episodes on the disc and nothing more. The 'Welcome to You're "Doom"' postcard (a funny in-joke) was interesting, but more insight into the origins of the show and its making would have been more appreciated. Hopefully we'll get more value in future Adult Swim DVD releases (but please, no more "commentaries" that have nothing to do with the show).

"Go Time!"
From Sealab 2021 creators Matt Thompson and Adam Reed, Frisky Dingo takes the superhero spoof to new levels. Frisky Dingo introduces us to murderous supervillain Killface (who can be seen on the cover of the DVD set) who has plans to annihilate humankind. All that stands in his way is Awesome X, the superhero alter-ego of billionaire tycoon Xander Crews, and his incredibly inept team of X-ticles. As said before, Frisky Dingo is from the creators of Sealab 2021, so you can expect the same kind of ridiculous, insane, hilarity to be more than prevelant here. The animation is a step above and beyond what has been seen on Adult Swim in recent times, and the show features some of the absolute funniest dialogue and visual gags you will ever see from an original Adult Swim series. Along with Metalocaplypse, Frisky Dingo is the best newer show to hit Adult Swim in years, and this first season DVD set is sheer proof of that. An essential addition to any and every Adult Swim fan's library.

This is a pop culture masterpiece. Every time I watch this, I crack up. Well drawn and excellent writing. I almost do not want to watch season two because this one is so excellent. Dark humor, not for kids.

Pucca - Ninjas Love Noodles

so cute
This show is adorable and hilarious to boot. I love the physical comedy - still so effective in such a simple style of animation. There are a lot of funny little touches, usually related to the characters; Santa Claus lives in the ninja village, there's one kid who's always showing off like Bruce Lee and ripping his shirt off. I have a pretty well cultivated sense of humor (or so I'd like to think) and this show made me laugh consistently. It's really cute and I'd recommend it to anyone who's a fan of animated shorts, be they children or not.

Planet Earth, Vol. 1: From Pole to Pole/Mountains/Fresh Water

Love this series
I love the Planet Earth series. Since it was too expensive for me to buy the entire series, I bought disc 1 because it includes "From pole to pole" which is summarization of the entire series and has some spectacular photographing. If you really love this series but are unsure about dropping $50+, get this. It'll satisfy you.

Amazing Photography
As someone who enjoys photography I certainly enjoyed the spectacular views provided by Planet Earth. The dedication by the photographers to capture not only the scenery of our planet but the wildlife brings the viewer into a portion of the planet not visited by many. If "arm chair" traveling is the only way you have to see the world about you, then this series is only way to go!

Excellent DVD
The DVD Planet Earth, Vol.1 arrived in less than a week from the date of purchase, and arrived in the best of conditions. I was completely blown away with the HD and sound clarity that over came my home.

National Geographic: Six Degrees Could Change the World

Spectacular. Professional. Visually Powerful. Life Changing.
This is a spectacular piece of professional work and so compelling as to be inspirational.

I watched this with my wife with no lights, and decided to take no notes. Here are the highlights from my memory.

1) Brilliant, utterly brilliant, history, photography, personalities (such as the Indian guru that has photographed the source of the Ganges for 50 years) and sequencing. I don't want to overdo it, but this may well be the single most important DVD of the century, and so worthy of both buying, showing to groups, and giving as a gift to others.

2) We are well on our way to 2-3 degrees rise, and if we do not begin to act sensibly now, toward six degrees. I absolutely loved the way this film developed, showing the changes one degree at a time. informative but questionable
I think a break down of the ratings speak for themselve a bit.

One person put a 1 because they found it offensive(perhaps they don't like the idea of spending money to find an alternative to dumping their company's waste in the river.)

The other person put a 5 (perhaps they bought everything this propa-documentary said and hate selfish people that are too profit motivated or believe everything the powers that be try to sell them.)

Well I thought it was informative. But I also noticed some things that attempted to manipulated the viewers thoughts and opinions, like showing the nuclear plant's exhaust while talking about carbon dioxide and fossil fuels. That exhaust is water vapor from cooling towers, not smoke plumes.
Same with the catasrophic weather and katrina. Yes it was a catasrophic storm, but a lot of the suffering in N.O. was partly to blame on gross negligence of the powers that be.

I did notice it had high production values...

National security issue.
It's a shame how militarists have so narrowly defined "national security" as an issue to focus us on war-making. But as ample evidence shows, we have security issues that involve building a sustainable economy, renewable energy, sensible transit, green architecture, new urbanism and much else.
I saw "Six Degrees" on the National Geographic Channel, and the author of the book was recently interviewed on C-SPAN's BookTV. As impactful as these media efforts have been, social change is being stalled by reckless voices on radio stations around the country (Limbaugh alone is on over 700 stations) who are misinforming millions of politically engaged people. These same people insist that we spare no expense when it comes to threats from foreign policy blowback, but they refuse to acknowledge the potential catastrophe of double-glazing the planet in carbon dioxide.
"Security" does not have to mean more profits for weapons contractors...

Fine for Fans on a Budget. Videophiles Should Look to Canada ...
A friend of mine has the "Ultimate" US release featured on this page. I collected the original Canadian sets as they were released. Seen both. I wrote the following as Amazon commentary on the US releases of individual seasons. Still stand by it.

True, the US sets are cheaper than the Canada sets (though if you buy the Canada sets from Amazon.ca, they're LOTS cheaper than buying them as imports from Amazon.com). True, the Canadian sets have difficult packaging (DVD overlay and spindles that require a lot of pressure before you can pop out the disk without risk of damage). True the first two Canadian season sets use the dreaded "flipper" (2-sided) disks. True what we saw in the US as a third season of 22 (missing four episodes, by the way) was produced and broadcast in Canada as two seasons of 13 each -- and the third and fourth DVD sets are released separately too. Great set... if you don't mind VCD quality.
DUE SOUTH: THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION has got to be the worst quality commercial DVD I've ever seen. I was really looking forward to watching this series for the first time. 68 episodes for $30 didn't seem suspicious since I figured it's a little-known show that probably underperformed for the DVD studio in season sets, so they decided to burn off their investment in one affordable mega-set. When I saw the first disc my blood ran ice cold: 6 TV hours on one DVD? Okay, most TV sets won't break a 4-episode per disc limit or risk some serious image compression issues. Fancy sets will do 2 or 3 per disc which in my opinion generates a reference quality picture. I thumbed through the rest of the discs and would have laughed had I not broke the manufacturer's shrinkwrap, thereby making a refund impossible: Some discs in this set contain a whopping 7 episodes!!!
